It’s been a couple of weeks since my first My French Friend episode was published, but I’m happy to say that my baby project is slowly but surely chugging along!
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of seeing one of my very good friends from France on a trip up to the Bay Area.
I met Laurie in February of last year (2015) while we both worked at a French-immersion preschool in Oakland, California. While the overall experience with the fellow staff was not ideal for me, I always think that meeting and becoming friends with Laurie was the true saving grace of my experience there.
We have those friendships in our lives when two people just ‘click’ and immediately hit it off, and I definitely think that it was like that with Laurie. I remember us both being silly as assistant teachers – whether it was belting out Let It Go in front of all of the confused kids, organizing a wedding between a little boy and a little girl during aftercare, or just being dumbfounded together in regards to some of the other teachers’, shall we say, “quirks.”
Due in part to technical difficulties, I wasn’t able to record the entirety of our conversation, which involved talk about mother-daughter relationships, the art of scavenging for abandoned treasures (read: furniture), and the extent of one’s personal freedom.
Even so, our small chat discussing that old expression “beauty is pain” and whether it has any real merit anymore seems to suffice in displaying Laurie’s adorable “French-ness” as well as the silly and natural conversation that occurs whenever we get together.
Cheers and enjoy the second episode of My French Friend!
